The integrity of your tooth enamel plays an important role in giving your teeth the strength to bite, chew, and grind. Plaque and acids from your food can demineralize the enamel on your teeth which will increase your risk of cavities.

Your dentist notices a problem with your enamel, he might recommend a fluoride treatment to strengthen your teeth. This can be performed at the end of the appointment.

Dr. Peter McPherson can administer the fluoride treatment in a few minutes by using concentrated fluoride gel in trays that fit in your mouth. The trays will need to be held in your mouth for a few minutes.

It’s best to avoid eating or drinking for at least half an hour after the fluoride treatment. This will allow the fluoride to penetrate your tooth enamel and restore much of its mineral density. This makes your teeth less prone to cavities and tooth sensitivity.

If the doctor has further concerns about the strength of your enamel, he might also prescribe fluoride supplements. Those may come in the form of a prescription toothpaste or mouthwash.
